What Makes a Great Relationship?
It can take 5 minutes to 5 months to even 2 years to develop a relationship. It all depends on the child so stick with it, keep showing up and it will happen. Meanwhile, read over the following suggestions to building a great relationship.
- Use your prayer partner! Prayer partners are very often underutilized by mentors. They can pray for a connection between the child and mentor as well as patience for the mentor's expectations. As the relationship progresses, more distinct issues will come up that will need prayer.
- What if your child doesn't like you? Be sure to first check your own expectations. Have the mind set that you are going to stick with it no matter what. The child may actually be having more fun than you think but they can't express it due to emotional issues and scars. Ask the child how they think the relationship is going. Mentors are usually the last to know!
- What prevents a good relationship? Focus on the relationship and having fun as well as academics. Fun and sharing is part of the child feeling good about the relationship and themselves. If you come in with an agenda without fun, the child feels like the adult is just telling them what to do.
